Aunt Jean's Pies

On Tuesday of last week a DREAM of mine came true.  I have to say before I start that I come from a LONG legacy of wonderful, talented southern cooks on BOTH sides of my family.  The type of cook that could give Paula Deen a run for her money ANY day.  They share the same philosophy as she---"if it calls for 1 stick of butter, 2 might be better."  I never have a memory of a bad meal at the dinner table.  When our family gathered, no matter what, you knew the meal was going to be fantastic!

My Great-Aunt Jean is known for her pies.  She makes them from scratch...even the crust.  Her pies are just as beautiful as they are delicious.  I have ALWAYS wanted to know how to make them.  I did not just want the recipe, but I wanted to look over her shoulder as she made one from start to finish.  Before we were going to Tyler I wrote her and asked her if she would let me come watch her make one of her famous pies.  That it was my Christmas wish.  :)  She gladly said yes, and let me tell you it was a TOTAL BLAST!  My mom came with me and we filmed the whole thing.  I told Aunt Jean I wanted it documented so I could go back and watch it later on because I am bound and determined to master this pie.

We had a great time.  My Aunt Jean is a hoot.  Her apron says "I kiss better than I cook".  I love it!  She is so much fun and was thrilled that I would want to come learn from her---how could I not??  It makes me want to film my grandmother next.  She is stock full of tricks, tips, and good ole' recipes that are up in that head of hers.  That will be next time.

What a treasure that morning was.  I'll always be thankful I asked to go over there to watch her make her pie---I'll be even more thankful that I have it filmed one day!!  She let me leave with the pie she made and that night we all ate it after dinner.  Ohhh how it was so unbelievably good---someone commented on how good it was and Hudson said, "NO, it is not good, it is THE BEST PIE IN THE WORLD!"  Needless to say the people in my house are pretty happy that I am going to learn how to make this pie.

I think today will be the day I try to make one on my own....we'll see how it turns out!!

LOOK AT THAT!!!!  ALMOST TOO PRETTY TO EAT---ALMOST.
